Can I still collect unemployment while going to school?
February 4th, 2009 Posted by: admin
I am getting out of the army and afterwards will enroll in a state-accredited truck driving school so I can get my CDL License and start working as a truck driver once I graduate. My question is this…While I’m going to school, can I collect unemployment so I can pay-off my living expenses every month?

Only if you are able and available to work so I do not think so unless the school runs at night or not at the same time your last job did as those are the hours they will go by.

Only if you are looking for employment too. If you’ve pulled yourself out of the job market to go to school, then no, you cannot.

it depends on what state you are in

To best of my knowledge one has to have have worked for a certain period of time then be laid off or terminated by the employer in order to qualify for unemployment. It sounds like you’ll be receiving an honorary discharge so I believe the answer is no.
But you can always check around to see what type of assistance is available. You might start by getting on the website for your state; it should list resources and contacts. The address for the state office websites should be the 2-letter abbreviation for the state, followed by .gov. (For example, ca.gov, mi.gov, wa.gov…) Also there may be some army offices that can assist.
It sounds like you’ve established a clear career goal so don’t let anything get in the way from reaching it - I’m sure there’s help somewhere.
Good luck and thank you for your service to our country!
